Rotary Student Of The Month: January 2021

Rotarian Marty Hilton introduced our first student, Jasmin James.  Jasmin, a senior at Mary Walker High School, lives in Ford, Washington with her parents, who serve as foster parents in a household of nine. Enrolled in Upward Bound at Mary Walker and a Running Start student at Spokane Falls Community College, Jasmin serves as a Student Representative and Sergeant at Arms in high school, as well as volunteering at the local food bank. Sociology, English, and math are some of her favorite subjects, and she’s looking at Eastern Washington University after high school, and maybe a future in small business.

Principal Clint Hull introduced Benjamin Brown as one of Riverside High School’s best and brightest. Like Rotary, Ben displays “service above self” in finding ways to give back, and is currently putting together a talent show for the students. Ben’s interests include music, singing, and writing songs, along with all forms of art, and has competed in Riverside’s Poetry Slams. He is also very interested in nature, herbalism, and Native American People. Happy to be back at school, Ben appreciates that Riverside is a tight knit group. He would like a future in the Forest Service, and when asked, said he especially likes the cedar forests of Northern Idaho.

Sam Riebold, a senior at Deer Park High School, was introduced by Rotarian Warren Schick, who told us how impressed he is with the support Sam’s parents give to their children. Sam’s siblings include two sisters: his twin and an older sister.  Sam sees his parents as the best of both worlds: a proper, world-traveled mother born in Australia, and his father, from Wyoming, who still doesn’t own a cell phone. Sam has participated in football and track in high school, and was looking forward to wrestling for the first time, but doesn’t know now if and when that will happen. He was involved in 4H and FFA but has found a new interest in shop class. His current schedule includes Civics, English, and four shop classes, where he enjoys making cool things like a metal pizza oven which twenty students worked together to produce.  He is looking at UTI schools in Arizona and Texas because he enjoys welding, and would like to pursue a future in some form of trade.  Sam thanked the club for selecting him as a Student of the Month.
